Composition 470: Figured Black Walnut Board with Maple + Osage Orange

A beautiful piece of figured Black Walnut, interrupted on purpose.

Sometimes the starting point for a composition is a combination of woods. Sometimes it's one piece of wood I don't want to lose sight of.

For Board #470, that piece is Black Walnut with beautiful figuring and movement of its own. Rather than breaking it up too much, I used strips of Maple and Osage Orange as contrasting interruptions through the darker Walnut.

The Maple brings a lighter note. The Osage Orange adds a stronger hit of color. But the Black Walnut remains the reason for the board.

At 17.75 inches long, it gives you a generous working surface without the thickness or weight of a chopping block, making it a versatile board for everyday prep, cutting and serving.

What Makes This Board Different

The accent woods aren't there to compete with the Walnut. They're there to make you notice it.

Light Maple and bright Osage Orange interrupt the darker field just enough to create contrast, while the natural figuring in the Black Walnut provides movement that I couldn't design into the wood myself.

The composition came from deciding what to add—and what to leave alone.

Care

Hand wash only with mild soap and warm water. Do not soak or place in the dishwasher. Dry promptly and allow the board to dry completely before storing.

A small tin of our Chefdude Board Butter is included with every board. Apply periodically to help condition and maintain the wood.
