A familiar apple shape, with something unexpected running through the center.
This apple-shaped serving board begins with quarter-sawn White Oak, but look closer and there's much more happening in the wood.
Through the center, Frank created a thin woven accent from strips of Walnut, Maple, and Osage Orange. Dark, light, and warm-toned woods cross through the Oak in a narrow detail that adds color and complexity without taking over the board.
The White Oak has plenty of character of its own. Interesting white markings appear within the wood, while chatoyancy along the edge catches the light and gives the grain a shifting sense of movement as you view the board from different angles.
At 14.75" x 11.75", the apple shape provides a useful serving surface for cheeses, fruit, bread, appetizers, or a smaller charcuterie spread.

What Makes This Board Different
There's detail here at two very different scales.
From across the table, you notice the apple silhouette and the thin multicolored weave running through the center.
Get closer, and the White Oak starts showing off.
The unusual white markings become part of the composition, and along the edge, the chatoyancy gives the Oak an almost shifting appearance as the light changes.
Frank didn't overwhelm that natural character with the accent. The weave is narrow enough to interrupt the Oak without becoming more important than it.
It's a small, deliberate detail set into a piece of wood that already had plenty to say.
Made to be used. Made to be seen. Made with the wood as the starting point.
Care
Hand wash only with mild soap and warm water. Do not soak or place in the dishwasher. Dry promptly and allow the board to dry completely before storing. Periodic conditioning with a food-safe board oil will help maintain the wood.
