Solid Spalted Maple Chopping Block with Yakisugi-Style Edges

One solid piece of Spalted Maple, with the marks nature already put there left to do their thing.

For this chopping block, I started with a single substantial piece of Spalted Maple—no glued joints and no additional woods needed.

The spalting has already drawn its own lines through the Maple, so rather than interrupting the surface, I added contrast around it. The edges have been treated using a Yakisugi-style technique, creating a dark perimeter against the lighter Maple, while one live edge preserves more of the original shape and character of the wood.

Black rubber feet raise and stabilize the block on the counter.

At 1.6 inches thick and 4.9 pounds, it's a substantial working block for someone who wants to chop on one solid piece of wood.

What Makes This Board Different

Spalting creates lines, patterns and variations in the Maple that couldn't be planned or repeated. Add the irregularity of the live edge, and this piece already had plenty to say before I did anything to it.

The dark Yakisugi-style edges frame that natural character rather than competing with it.

And beneath all of that visual interest, the cutting surface remains what I intended it to be: one uninterrupted piece of solid Spalted Maple with no glued joints.

Care

Hand wash only with mild soap and warm water. Do not soak or place in the dishwasher. Dry promptly and allow the block to dry completely before storing.

A small tin of our Chefdude Board Butter is included with every board. Apply periodically to help condition and maintain the wood.
